Many people have a passion in their lives, but too few are able to harness that passion and turn it into something positive for the community at large to witness. In the case of Gina Voegele-Hardisty, the customers are the beneficiaries.

Voegele-Hardisty is owner of the recently relocated Raspberry Beret consignment shop in downtown Highland Park. After three years uptown, at the corner of Woodbridge and South Ninth Avenues, she’s excited about her new location at 141 Raritan, on the corner of Raritan and North Second Avenues.

“We carry medium to very high end designer clothing and accessories in sizes 0-24 in a variety of current and vintage styles. Our shop is close to home and is affordable shopping. We sell gently used women’s clothing and accessories. This business is also another great form of recycling and is very green.’

Voegele-Hardisty has learned some valuable lessons since opening her shop in November of 2006 and has some solid advice for those who are interested in starting up their own business.
“I learned to budget well and keep your finances in order,’’ she said. “If your heart is telling you to open a business, do it, but do it wisely. Choose the right business for you. Research the business and the demand for that type of business. Most of all, make sure that you can afford to live without a salary until you are on your feet and making money . . . this could take a while."

“Like myself, many ladies are turning to unique resale and retail boutiques instead of going to the malls,’’ Voegele-Hardisty said. “They are much more fun and offer unique treasures. You never know what you might find.’’

And how did Voegele-Hardisty arrive at the name of Raspberry Beret for her shop? Voegele borrowed the name from a lyric by the artist Prince: ‘She wore a raspberry beret, the kind you find in a second hand store. . .’

Voegele-Hardisty looks forward to growing her business at her new location.

“Consignment is the answer for people who are looking to buy nice medium to high end items at an affordable price in any economy,’’ Voegele-Hardisty said. “My store is beautifully displayed, well organized and offers excellent customer service as well as a friendly shopping atmosphere.’’

Raspberry Beret consignment shop is open Tuesday through Saturday at 141 Raritan Avenue in Highland Park (Thursdays 'til 7 PM). The phone number is 732-246-4423.
