When students of Highland Park public schools returned to their classrooms last month, they might not have noticed any significant changes. And for this, many in the borough, and the schools administration, are breathing a sigh of relief. Drastic program cuts were averted, and since the schools levy vote in April, the district has actually obtained some additional funds.

The days were sweltering and the shade non-existent.

And though they were off the clock – or retired completely! – three borough employees donated their tools and their time this summer on behalf of the children of Irving Primary School.

With so many delicious choices, picking a flavor is never easy. The choice is particularly hard if it must be done on behalf of a large and diverse group of people.

Irving Primary School principal Nancy Romano didn’t bat an eye last week when police detectives, fire department officials and a state trooper took seats in classrooms throughout her school.

The email circulated by Highland Park school board president Wendy Saiff was urgent, if not frantic, in tone. The email announced a petition, on a fast track for state approval, to found a language and culture charter school in Highland Park.

Despite its diminutive size, Highland Park prides itself on being global minded, on emphasizing the success of our students, and for being progressive on issues such as the environment. So it comes as no surprise that three of Highland Park’s own alumni are integral employees of one of the smartest and greenest raw material export companies in the country, Anbakam Metals, based out of East Brunswick.

The company name comes from a word that means “house of love” in Tamil and Indian dialect. Though, with its ever-growing ventures, its international recognition, and a goal of growing into a billion-dollar-a-year company, Anbakam Metals seems more a budding empire than a simple house.

When the fabled Little Red Hen wanted to make bread, her friends were too busy, or too lazy, or just didn’t see the point. So Hen had to do it herself. When Vicki Zarra wanted to create a certified wildlife habitat on school grounds, though, she got lots of help.

On Friday, October 16, in a student assembly held at Irving School to recognize all of the brains and brawn that contributed to the completed project, Zarra recounted the Hen’s fable. Zarra, a pre-kindergarten teacher at the primary school, offered this conclusion: “When you get a good idea, don’t be afraid to ask for help -- and -- don’t be afraid to help when you hear a good idea, too.”
