It is a hot afternoon, but you would never know it by the energy in the backyard on South Seventh Avenue. I count roughly 16 children hanging out on a wooden play set, but their attention is focused on the dynamic blonde woman in front of them.

She is going over stage directions, calling out both children’s and character’s names, giving them direction, praising parts of their performances. She checks the time, and asks them if they are ready to move to a new scene. Half of them eagerly shout their assent, a few others groan.

Stephanie Berry is a dancer, an actress, an English teacher, a community and political activist, and oh yes, an OBIE Award winning playwright. Language is her choreography; when asked she’ll joyfully tell you “words dance for me.”

Make no mistake, with phrases like “Their futures will never catch up with my past” ("The Shaneequa Chronicles") this woman’s words dance complex ballets.

Playwright Daniel Beaty is a soft-spoken, polite and gentle man, but his passion for people is fierce.  Daniel believes passionately in the power and grace of mothers . . . . that children should have fathers . . . . that people should treat themselves and each other with dignity and respect.

If you missed the Intersect Fund’s Holiday Bazaar held at the New Brunswick Hyatt December 10th, not to worry. Their clients plan to be in business for a long time to come.

The Intersect Fund is the brainchild of Joe Shure and Rohan Mathew, graduates of Rutgers University. While editors at the Daily Targum, the student-run Rutgers newspaper, they watched many local businesses struggle with the changing demographics that New Brunswick’s revitalization program had brought.

Joe and Rohan saw an opportunity to apply some of the skills they had learned at Rutgers and help their community. With a small grant from Magyar Bank in September of 2008, the Intersect Fund was born.
