The application to open Tikun Olam Hebrew Language Academy was denied in New Jersey's latest round of charter submissions, released by the state Department of Education on September 30th.

Unlike the spring 2011 approvals of 23 new schools, department officials gave the nod to only four applicants in the latest cycle.

Two development firms seeking court assistance to build nearly 300 apartments on Highland Park's north side presented their proposals at a heated public meeting Monday, September 19.

The firms – River Road H.P. and American Properties – had filed affordable housing suits against the borough to build large housing developments at the former Illuminating Experiences and Midland Ross/Honeywell sites along Cleveland Avenue, for a total of 284 new apartments.

Calling for reforms in the approval and oversight of New Jersey  charter schools, nearly 300 people attended a rally outside Bartle Elementary School Tuesday evening.

Surrounded by Bartle’s playground – and sometimes fighting to be heard over the kids playing there – the rally featured speeches by Highland Park parents, students and local public officials.

In a unanimous vote, the Highland Park Board of Education has accepted the bid of Temco Facility Services to provide facilities management to the borough's public schools. The decision at Monday's board meeting was cheered by more than a dozen custodial and maintenance employees and their supporters.

The vote in favor of a new contract with the East Rutherford firm marks the formal end to the district’s contentious relationship with Sodexo, the nation’s largest provider of facility services.
