Sustainable Highland Park (Our Power HP), a committee dedicated to reducing the borough’s carbon footprint, held its regular meeting at borough hall on October 26th.

The group, first chartered as a working group to develop the borough's Green Community Plan, received in 2010 a grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a local energy efficiency program.

The Raritan River is a resource that belongs completely to New Jersey, with a 1200-mile watershed. It covers 100 municipalities and seven counties, serving over one million people.

In spite of this, there was no joint planning by the many governments involved, and there were no common goals for the river until the Sustainable Raritan River Initiative began. Individual groups did take on their own projects, but no one looked at regional planning.

The corner of North 4th and Madison Avenue is soon to be transformed from a scrubby nondescript corner to a neighborhood garden project with educational twist.

Jason Ruggieri’s vision for the corner is a showcase that teaches residents how to use native plants in landscaping on their own properties, and the benefits of doing so.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the state’s Energy Master Plan (EMP) to be unveiled.

The plan, under revision by the Christie administration for more than half a year, is once again being delayed, this time ostensibly because the state failed to follow public notice requirements associated with holding hearings on the document.

That was then, this is now.

It is a common refrain from politicians explaining a shift in positions, but it essentially summed up an appeals court ruling affirming the diversion of $158 million in clean energy funds to plug a hole in the current state budget by the Christie administration and the legislature.

Hoping to make sure New Jersey is in the forefront of states building an infrastructure to support electric vehicles, Democrats in the Assembly this month passed a package of bills mandating development of charging stations at new shopping centers and rest areas along the New Jersey Turnpike.

It may have seemed a long time coming to some, but the "Sprout Spot" at Irving Primary School, the "Lettuce Grow" garden at Bartle Elementary, and the Highland Park Middle & High School's "Garden of Eatin'" are in full swing. Teachers, students and the community are enjoying the fruits (or veggies!) of their labor.

At the middle school/high school garden, Dara Botvinick often holds class surrounded by the lettuce, spinach, peas, beans, nasturtium, and tomato and squash plants. "I really enjoy the impact of the garden on the students,” says Botvinick.

Religious groups have always provided guidance on a range of issues, but historically, the environment hasn’t been one of them. Global warming seems to have changed all that, as leaders and followers of faith traditions contemplate our impact on the planet and on ourselves, and how we might change it.

While the Reverend Billy and the Church of LIfe after Shopping have been taking their environmental campaigns to the streets, with guerrilla theater protesting consumer culture, Reverend Fletcher Harper, executive director of Green Faith, has taken it to the Internet. Early this winter, as Congress considered the American Clean Energy and Security Act and the world geared up for the Copenhagen summit, the national faith-based organization hosted a webcast on "Green Jobs, Climate Justice."

When the fabled Little Red Hen wanted to make bread, her friends were too busy, or too lazy, or just didn’t see the point. So Hen had to do it herself. When Vicki Zarra wanted to create a certified wildlife habitat on school grounds, though, she got lots of help.

On Friday, October 16, in a student assembly held at Irving School to recognize all of the brains and brawn that contributed to the completed project, Zarra recounted the Hen’s fable. Zarra, a pre-kindergarten teacher at the primary school, offered this conclusion: “When you get a good idea, don’t be afraid to ask for help -- and -- don’t be afraid to help when you hear a good idea, too.”

Local homeowners, AmeriCorps workers, and Rutgers members of the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) came together in the older neighborhoods of New Brunswick to spread the gospel of energy efficiency. Student volunteers performed free energy audits for three homes on Friday, October 16, and did a hands-on demo of home weatherization for their hosts.
