Ever wonder why your e-mail’s spam box is always so full of ads for counterfeit pharmaceuticals (a.k.a. 'pharm spam'), penny stocks, sex aids, and fake Rolexes?

It’s a sure sign of spring when dog lovers begin to make their way to the dog run in Donaldson Park. This year small-dog owners had a happy discovery, a new section especially for small dogs.

While for many dog owners, the appearance of the small-dog park might seem sudden, there are those for whom it couldn’t arrive soon enough. Case in point: Taffee, the Jack Russell Terrier.

Russell Banks is an author that should not be missed. In 2008 he published the nonfiction book Dreaming Up America and the novel The Reserve. Like much of Banks' work, these two stories both take place in the Adirondacks, where the novelist lives with poet Chase Twitchell.

Some kids are just different from all the other kids from the very beginning. It seems to be an instinct among kids to tease or bully other kids who are different from them, and make them feel like outsiders. What the pack fails to realize is that as we get older, being an original and standing out from the crowd is a good thing.

Dear Milton, in business I know it is important for me to have goals. My question is: should my employees know my short and long term goals for my company? Marvin

Dear Marvin, You are correct that goal-setting in business is important. I believe it’s equally as important that members of your team know your overall goals and what they may be able to contribute. You may want to discuss their goals as well. However, communicating all of your short-term and long-term goals is not always necessary or advised.

You have my word; I will refund you as soon as I return.

“Forget Hollywood! You’ve completed five fascinating film scripts that may never get produced. Some of the best writers in Hollywood can’t get their films produced. With all the new digital technology nowadays you can produce your own feature films probably for under thirty thousand. I know you two can do it!”

Milton: In order to help my business grow, I know it is very important to network. In some of these groups, I know I will be called on to give a 30 – 60 second commercial about my business. I have a terrible fear of public speaking. How can I overcome this? Norman

Norman, you are not alone. According to The Book of Lists, our #2 fear is death. Our #1 fear is public speaking.

You’ve heard the refrain, endlessly no doubt: exercise for health and fitness, especially over age 40. However, that can have different meaning for everyone, depending on background, goals and experience.

Paul Kolody is Somerset Medical Center’s Manager of the Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Center. He has worked with athletes in a wide variety of sports. His best qualification, however, may come in this remark. “We try to do exactly the same things as all our athletes, no matter what the age. Not only does it make us well-versed in the program, but it shows them how to do it. Rarely do we ask the athletes to do something that we can’t do ourselves.”

Often times, those who spend their days nurturing others do well with reminders to care for themselves.  Yoga offers a path to peaceful family transitions from morning, noon, to night.  Little ones can be guided to transition smoothly, allowing newness to arrive more welcomed, rather than with resistance.  It is hard to stop doing something when you are enjoying it, especially when you are young and experiencing much in life for the first time.  Let these little transition tamers be a first step in taking care of you.  When you take good care of yourself you are better able to enjoy the process of giving.

"Live with passion."
- Tony Robbins

Be who you were born to be.  You have the power to influence the world around you by discovering who you really are.  There is something inside of you that defines you to you; the thing which only you can do the way you do it.

You were destined for greatness from the start.  It is absolutely critical that you believe with all your heart that you are destined to be great, and to do great things.

Networking is the latest business trend. Or is it?

Actually, business owners always have engaged in the art and science of networking. Only years ago, it didn't have a name. Business owners would get together, shake hands, smile and chat about themselves and their businesses.

Of course, we all know that early man was nomadic and his travels took him from place to place in search of food and water. But by the time of the Greeks, civilization had evolved to such a point that man had time for leisure and scholarly activities?  By the Middle Ages, young nobility were often sent on the “Grand Tour,” a long excursion to Europe’s most cultured cities, at times lasting up to several years.  The practice ushered in a new word – tourist – but by 1789, the tradition of the Grand Tour would come to an abrupt end with onset of the French Revolution.

It's easy to enjoy the new freedom of college. But freedom can have its consequences. And with the added stress of new responsibilities and peer pressure, it makes it all that much easier to fall victim to poor lifestyle habits.

Whether it's 5 pounds or 15, weight gain is a common college phenomenon. However, even a few pounds can have a negative effect, with a loss in muscle mass due to decreased physical activity-and added weight is just the tip of the health iceberg; it's a pattern that threatens to spiral downward.

Be careful of food and unhealthy living during the  holidays. How many times have you heard that said? For every treat and sweet, there is plenty of advice on how to moderate or avoid them. For every couch potato moment, there’s a workout promoted to counteract it.

But what if you could maintain your health and fitness without prime focus on calorie count and deprivation? You can, if you view healthy eating and exercise as a natural, enjoyable and integrated part of your holiday celebration. What’s more, there is the beneift of involving your entire family in the process.

I needed something to brighten my mental landscape when "Final Gifts" — our first feature film . . . four years of loving labor — was rejected by the Sundance Film Festival and the International Film Festival at Vail, Colorado.

As parents, many of us have a natural inclination towards making life as easy as possible for our kids.  We want them to have it better than we did, and certainly don't ever want to see them suffer.
But is that really the best thing for them?  Sometimes when life is too easy in childhood, it becomes too hard in adulthood.

Did you know. . . .
. . . about the New Brunswick & Highland Park based partnership that built one of the most successful homeware businesses in the country? One of these men, Jacob Janeway, was descended from a family that came to America in 1694.

Is it time to go out and have fun? Did you know that for a period of 90 years, one could find a variety of family entertainments, all within the borders of Highland Park? -- from horse racing to mini golf. Originally, Highland was an enclave and summer retreat for the wealthy.  To entertain themselves these worthies formed the Raritan Boat Club in 1870.  The Clubhouse floated in the Raritan River and was tied to an anchor at the Albany Street Bridge, a site for regattas and galas.
