We are writing to express our support for Greg Deatz, Dan Ross and Jessie Hughes for the three 3-year positions on the Highland Park Board of Education, and for Chandra Pointer-Titus for the one 2-year seat.

Greg, Dan, Jessie and Chandra are committed to our public schools. They are strong advocates of public education and have demonstrated their opposition to any measures that will undermine our schools (including charter schools and vouchers).

Highland Park is home to the best public schools in Middlesex County. This isn’t a matter of luck or good fortune – it starts with the dedicated volunteers serving on the school board who create the vision for the district and empower administrators and teachers to work hard every day to give our children the best education.

Public schools are one of the essential institutions of a healthy community. I believe that people on all sides of the school debates believe this to be true. Whether the arguments are about vouchers, charter schools, unions or budgets, there are good people on all sides of all school related issues. Passion runs high, understandably, but so too does unnecessary rhetoric that tries to paint one side against the other.

I am writing in support of Josh Fine’s candidacy for the Highland Park Board of Education. I moved with my family over ten years ago to Highland Park being attracted to a diverse, eclectic and educated community. As a college professor I value education and communal involvement. I am well aware of the unprecedented challenges for education and government today.

To the editor,

We are writing to you in support of Josh Fine, a candidate for the Highland Park Board of Education in the April 2011 elections. As parents of a 6-year-old special needs child attending Irving Primary School, we are very interested in Mr. Fine’s platform.

To the editor -

Gov. Christie plans to make it easier for charter schools to open, possibly two dozen or more. We do not need a charter school in Highland Park. Our school system offers an excellent education - the motivation for many families to live in this town. Should Hebrew language immersion be desired, there are multiple private schools to fulfill that wish. Hebrew language and religious instruction can also be arranged through after-school programs. A secular education should serve the needs of all children of the community.

[This excerpt from Pellicane's robustly hyperlinked blog post of January 12th is republished by the author's request. - Ed.]

Diverting money from already strained school budgets in order to open more charter schools, especially in towns with successful schools, will not solve any of New Jersey’s economic problems. It will also weaken the schools we have.

To the editor -

I was very excited when I saw that the Highland Park Mirror had resumed publishing. That was until I realized it could only be accessed “online.” I am aware that publishing in print is an expensive undertaking, but there are entire segments of the population that are disenfranchised by the “online” publication. Many residents either do not have a computer available to them, have dial-up, or just won’t go “on line.”

To the editor:
At the June 21st Highland Park High School graduation, Board of Education member Wendy Saiff delivered a completely inappropriate, politically-driven diatribe, replete with specious and demonstrably false assertions, and even some Sarah Palin-esque mispronunciations. I could go through it line by line and point out the many falsehoods and internal inconsistencies. But that would be too easy.

And it would miss the point.

Your article about the plans for the All Saints Episcopal Church [“Historic church headed for a makeover,” May 7th] omitted some critical facts. At each hearing the plans for the apartments were revised, from eight to ten to eleven units. With so little living space, why does Greenfaith have to locate a two room office there? No one answered that question. An office for a mental health counselor would be better use of that space.

Writing in the last issue of the Mirror [“Time to Get Serious about Cannabis,” Jan. 25th] Steven Liga argued that cannabis should be further studied to isolate the medically beneficial properties of the plant, so that medical professionals can prescribe a definite dosage to patients rather than legalizing medical marijuana and telling patients to “smoke this.”  It is certainly long past time to seriously study the benefits of marijuana. But the debate over medical marijuana sidesteps the more important principle of liberty.

The letter by Ruth Bickhardt printed in the January 25 issue of the Mirror urges Highland Park residents not to use salt on their icy sidewalks, claiming that “It’s actually the law.”  I would like to know to which law Ms.
