Nine months out of the school year, students learn “history.” During February, students get to learn about the accomplishments of certain “notable” Black Americans, read speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Frederick Douglass, and learn a little something about slavery in America.

With February — Black History Month — now past and Women’s History Month upon us, the expectation might be that the lessons particular to Black History Month will give way to lessons about “notable women,” and in April, schools return to “normal” studies. No more having to include African-American or women’s perspectives or historical participation in any significant way for another year.

On January 26th at the Rutgers Student and Alumni Federal Credit Union's (RSA FCU) annual public meeting, a new board of directors was elected. The board expanded from five to nine members, with only one returning member from the previous board, Ken Buren, who founded the student & alumni credit union while a student at Rutgers.

Members of political action committee Empower Our Neighborhoods (EON) were elected to four seats, along with RSA FCU administrator Aimee Becker, a university senior.

The Highland Park High School varsity wrestling team finishes 11-11 on the season and earned a lot of accolades along the way.

The Owls came up one position short of placing into the Group 1 sectional tournament, finishing seventh, but were led by a number of young and seasoned grapplers who showed their merit and strength in on the mat and off.

The New Brunswick Public Library hosted a talk by local author, CEO and activist Takerra Allen about her first book, Thicker Than Water, published in July 2009.

Allen's novel about four friends, strong young women from Brick City Newark, is loosely informed by real people in the author's life. Dubbed "the Urban Sex in the City" in the publisher's notes, this novel is about the friendships between the main characters, and the romantic relationships with the men in their lives. The story lasts only one summer in the lives of four strong women, but it squeezes in love, lust, deception, and some very bad behavior.

Not so quietly, a grass roots movement is sweeping through the borough to grow food on the lawns, balconies, and even roofs of private homes and in public places. According to organizers from the Edible Gardens Project, each garden helps undo climate change, builds community, and brings healthy, fresh food in to local homes.

You might have seen the raised bed gardens in flower last summer at some thirty homes, at three borough churches, or in front of the Highland Park Public Library. Some of the produce from all of these gardens was enjoyed by the growers; some was traded, while others donated to the Highland Park Food Pantry.

Beirut, the capital city of Lebanon, was recently called the top place to visit by The New York Times and the Lonely Planet Travel Guide coined it one of the top 10 liveliest cities in the world. The ancient Mediterranean seaport, nicknamed "Paris of the East," is best known for its night life and sumptuous food, and Zeina Restaurant brings a bit of that glamor to Highland Park.

"Live with passion."
- Tony Robbins

Be who you were born to be.  You have the power to influence the world around you by discovering who you really are.  There is something inside of you that defines you to you; the thing which only you can do the way you do it.

You were destined for greatness from the start.  It is absolutely critical that you believe with all your heart that you are destined to be great, and to do great things.
