For six weeks the borough's Board of Education has explored the possibility of opening Highland Park High School to students residing in nearby towns. As more details of the state's Choice District program have been discussed, the proposal has sparked controversy.

On November 14, the Highland Park Board of Education focused on four achievement reports presented by the district's principals for the 2010-2011 academic year.

The reports indicated mixed results for the various grades tested, Assistant Superintendent Karen Lewis said. Only the high school scores classify as reaching Adequate Yearly Progress levels, Lewis said, “but it’s only one grade tested there,” possibly distorting the value of the raw statistics.

At a public forum next week, the citizens of Highland Park, Edison, and New Brunswick will air their views on the proposed Tikun Olam Hebrew Language Charter High School.

A number of public officials on all sides of the issue, including Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf and State Senator Barbara Buono, have been invited. Representatives from the three public districts affected will also be in attendance. All three school districts have been vocally opposed to the charter school.

At their best, charter schools should serve students who have been in the public schools – but have not been well-served.

The proposed Hebrew Language Charter High School makes no sense in Highland Park, because (1) our High School has responded to suggestions made by the charter “founders”; (2) our town is small and adding another District with its own administration is a waste of taxpayer dollars; and (3) the “founder” of this school, Shoshana Akman, has not tried our schools for her family.

The application to open Tikun Olam Hebrew Language Academy was denied in New Jersey's latest round of charter submissions, released by the state Department of Education on September 30th.

Unlike the spring 2011 approvals of 23 new schools, department officials gave the nod to only four applicants in the latest cycle.

Calling for reforms in the approval and oversight of New Jersey  charter schools, nearly 300 people attended a rally outside Bartle Elementary School Tuesday evening.

Surrounded by Bartle’s playground – and sometimes fighting to be heard over the kids playing there – the rally featured speeches by Highland Park parents, students and local public officials.

In a unanimous vote, the Highland Park Board of Education has accepted the bid of Temco Facility Services to provide facilities management to the borough's public schools. The decision at Monday's board meeting was cheered by more than a dozen custodial and maintenance employees and their supporters.

The vote in favor of a new contract with the East Rutherford firm marks the formal end to the district’s contentious relationship with Sodexo, the nation’s largest provider of facility services.

With legislators next week slated to take up the issue of how New Jersey’s charter schools are approved and monitored, schools districts continue to press for a local vote on any new charter.

"It’s not that we’d like to stop charters or control them, but there was a feeling we would like to have more local say," says Frank Belluscio, spokesman for the New Jersey School Boards Association.

On March 31st, April 1st, and April 2nd, Highland Park High School presented the hit Seussical: The Musical, to sold-out audiences. The atmosphere on all three nights was colored by the laughter of children and adults, beaming faces of performers and directors, and a somewhat foreign difficulty in locating empty seats.

in•ad•e•quate adj. Not adequate to fulfill a need or meet a requirement; insufficient.

The need, in this case, is for each and every one of our children to receive a thorough and efficient education. The insufficiency lies in Gov. Chris Christie’s arbitrary cuts to school funding.

The student arrived late to the honor roll ceremony at my son's middle school last week. Even though it was almost over, the teaching staff graciously presented him with his certificate for high honors. The tall, shy African-American walked across the gym floor to polite applause and a visible lack of camera flash. No parent was there to congratulate him.

We are writing to express our support for Greg Deatz, Dan Ross and Jessie Hughes for the three 3-year positions on the Highland Park Board of Education, and for Chandra Pointer-Titus for the one 2-year seat.

Greg, Dan, Jessie and Chandra are committed to our public schools. They are strong advocates of public education and have demonstrated their opposition to any measures that will undermine our schools (including charter schools and vouchers).

As a parent whose children graduated from the Highland Park Public Schools and a taxpayer, I am writing in support of Josh Fine's candidacy for the Highland Park Board of Education.

Highland Park is home to the best public schools in Middlesex County. This isn’t a matter of luck or good fortune – it starts with the dedicated volunteers serving on the school board who create the vision for the district and empower administrators and teachers to work hard every day to give our children the best education.
