For six weeks the borough's Board of Education has explored the possibility of opening Highland Park High School to students residing in nearby towns. As more details of the state's Choice District program have been discussed, the proposal has sparked controversy.

The Rutgers African-American Alumni Alliance (RAAA) held its Eighth Annual Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony on October 15th at New Brunswick’s Hyatt Hotel with cocktails, dinner and music.

Evelyn Sermons Field praised generations of activists, including white college students, who lobbied for integration well before the 1950s. “I am mostly indebted to people I never knew, who made it possible for me to be one of the first two African-American women to live in the dorms on the Douglass campus,” she explained in her acceptance speech at New Brunswick's Hyatt Hotel

Calling for reforms in the approval and oversight of New Jersey  charter schools, nearly 300 people attended a rally outside Bartle Elementary School Tuesday evening.

Surrounded by Bartle’s playground – and sometimes fighting to be heard over the kids playing there – the rally featured speeches by Highland Park parents, students and local public officials.

The corner of North 4th and Madison Avenue is soon to be transformed from a scrubby nondescript corner to a neighborhood garden project with educational twist.

Jason Ruggieri’s vision for the corner is a showcase that teaches residents how to use native plants in landscaping on their own properties, and the benefits of doing so.

In a unanimous vote, the Highland Park Board of Education has accepted the bid of Temco Facility Services to provide facilities management to the borough's public schools. The decision at Monday's board meeting was cheered by more than a dozen custodial and maintenance employees and their supporters.

The vote in favor of a new contract with the East Rutherford firm marks the formal end to the district’s contentious relationship with Sodexo, the nation’s largest provider of facility services.

The borough council veteran's play for the center chair drew outrage and complaints of "unethical," "disrespectful" behavior from local party leaders throughout the day and into Tuesday’s election.

Highland Park’s “A Better World" Café opens its second summer in operation with an exciting expansion. Starting June 17, patrons will be able to enjoy ‘suggested price’ dinners on Friday evenings.

The new hours -- 11 AM to 9 PM on Friday and 11 AM to 3PM on Monday through Thursday -- coincide with the opening of the borough's "Jersey Fresh" Farmers Market located outdoors at 222 Raritan Avenue, adjacent to A Better World Café.

The Highland Park school board approved individual 2011-12 salaries for the district's 192 returning professional staff -- teachers, counselors, classroom assistants and support staff -- at their June 6th meeting.

Full-time teaching salaries increased by the contracted rates of between 1.4 and 2.3%, according to the district's salary resolution published at http://www.highlandpark.k12.nj.us/board/agendas/agendate/6%206%2011.pdf.

Thirty-one films will have their New Jersey or Area premiere screenings, as part of the New Jersey International Film Festival Summer 2011, which opens on the Rutgers campus next Friday, June 3rd with Melt, Savasana, and The Sandman.

 

Al Nigrin, the festival’s curator and executive director, says several of this summer’s films have a New Jersey connection.

Pulte Homes, the developers of “Overlook at Highland Park” at the intersection of River Road and Cedar Lane, have applied for relief from two conditions of their site plan approval: first, a mandate that the historic Cenacle House on the property be turned over to "a public entity" for the purpose of preservation; and second, the timeline for completion of the project’s 18 affordable housing units.

The Highland Park Planning Board met on May 19 to exchange ideas with the Washington Square Group of Chatham, a real etate developer which is seeking to build a two-story building at 138 Raritan Avenue.

The Washington Square Group represents the Seven-Eleven Corporation in proposing a convenience store, with upstairs offices, on the former Sunoco gas station site.

The rain, the wind, fog and lightning do not deter them. Snug in their raincoats, brandishing umbrellas, and weighed down with sacks and cartons of books, the Highland Park community pours into the library on a recent Tuesday morning.

Of course the first step was to explore through attics and dive into basements, packing cartons of books: the telltale evidence of mystery book clubs; the college chums that changed your life; troubled assets from Borders and Waldenbooks; gently-loved hand-me-downs from the children . . .  they all go into the mix and magic comes out.

With legislators next week slated to take up the issue of how New Jersey’s charter schools are approved and monitored, schools districts continue to press for a local vote on any new charter.

"It’s not that we’d like to stop charters or control them, but there was a feeling we would like to have more local say," says Frank Belluscio, spokesman for the New Jersey School Boards Association.

The Highland Park borough council adopted a resolution amending its 2011 budget at a May 3 session.

According to Kathleen Kovach, borough administrator and chief financial officer, this budget's $1.70 per $100 of assessed value rate represents a 2.4 percent increase over last year's spending plan.

Highland Park has long been associated with many artists, famously including painter Roy Lichtenstein, who is said to have made his first Pop Art painting here; sculptor George Segal, who taught art clases in the borough; and J. Seward Johnson, founder of Hamilton Township's Grounds for Sculpture.

To celebrate the health of our local arts community, the Highland Park Arts Commission will hold an Open Studios event on the afternoon of Sunday, May 15th.

The combined personal / environmental health fair -- dubbed 'Healthy People, Healthy Planet 2011' -- will include home energy savings, healthy cooking, dancing, bicycle repair, massage, edible gardens, preventive health screenings, and more.

On Saturday May 7th, a new musical, "Oh, Ah, Noah!" will have its world premiere at the Reformed Church of Highland Park. The play in two acts for musical theater was written by members of the congregation.

 

Borrowing Shakespeare’s mechanism of dual roles, the dozen actors of the ensemble are portraying animal characters in some scenes, and human characters in others. Forty Highland Park residents, kids and adults, constructed the animal puppets used in the show.
