The late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life's most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” This Sunday, I felt honored and, really, quite lucky to join some of the Reformed Church of Highland Park and other visitors in a symbolic “passing of the torch” from the All Saints' Episcopal Church to the upcoming Veteran’s Housing project, “Bring Them Home to Homes.”

Highland Park athletes will tell you that there’s something contagious about playing sports at the school. It’s a sense of familiarity that stays with you long after graduation and can be a factor in luring you back home. This is the case for 2002 graduate Tim Stark HPHS '02, who has returned to the Stockman Gym as assistant coach of girls basketball.

“To me, it’s familiar because this team is in the same spot I was in during my time here,” Stark said. “They’re competing for the lead in the Blue Division and preparing for a deep state tournament run. I’ve had the chance to learn a lot from [head coach] Erin Washington and the kids. In the end, I make decisions but they do all the work on the court.”

Princeton Ballet School, the educational arm of American Repertory Ballet, has found a permanent home on the fourth floor of Crossroads Theatre, a home that is perfect for an institution with deep roots in the city. The school has two other studios, in the Princeton Shopping Center and in Cranbury, but its New Brunswick location has changed several times recently. It was located at 80 Albany Street for almost eighteen years, and then moved briefly to New Brunswick High School before settling at Crossroads, in the heart of New Brunswick's theatre district.

Of course, we all know that early man was nomadic and his travels took him from place to place in search of food and water. But by the time of the Greeks, civilization had evolved to such a point that man had time for leisure and scholarly activities?  By the Middle Ages, young nobility were often sent on the “Grand Tour,” a long excursion to Europe’s most cultured cities, at times lasting up to several years.  The practice ushered in a new word – tourist – but by 1789, the tradition of the Grand Tour would come to an abrupt end with onset of the French Revolution.

Often times, those who spend their days nurturing others do well with reminders to care for themselves.  Yoga offers a path to peaceful family transitions from morning, noon, to night.  Little ones can be guided to transition smoothly, allowing newness to arrive more welcomed, rather than with resistance.  It is hard to stop doing something when you are enjoying it, especially when you are young and experiencing much in life for the first time.  Let these little transition tamers be a first step in taking care of you.  When you take good care of yourself you are better able to enjoy the process of giving.
