Safe sidewalks

To the Editor:

Mr. Levy's column "On The Safe Side" in the most recent edition of The Mirror contains some excellent advice for walkers. I suggest, though, that there was a very important omission.

While there are no laws that I know prohibiting walking in the streets, rather than on the sidewalks where provided, it doesn't make much sense to do so. It doesn't set a good example for young children for one thing. The other consideration is that a driver coming around a corner, particularly at night, may not see persons walking in the street in time to avoid an accident. The return to Eastern Standard Time makes matters even worse.

Sidewalks have been provided for good reason. Why not use them? Highland Park should be known as a safe "walking town".
