Music turns out to be true calling for composer Bianculli
Valeri Drach Weidmann

On a warm night late in May, jazz pianist and composer John Bianculli held a fundraiser for the Highland Park Public Library. The audience enjoyed performances from his trio . . .

We have pocket doors between our living room and dining room and I wanted to know the history of these doors.

Parker Home's Pavilion growing as the place to meet & greet

If you’ve ever been on a cruise ship, you know the trip is all about the amenities. The pool, the sauna, the games and the food! You also know how unfortunate it is when the trip comes to an end. The Francis E. Parker Memorial Home has mastered . . . .

“Craggers” volunteer a plan for the planet

A recent poll suggested 28% of Britons thought the idea of setting mandatory limits on individuals' carbon emissions was socially acceptable, even though most feel lifestyle changes rather than simply legislation will be necessary . . . .

I have an idea to plant a typical 19th century garden this summer and wondered what types of flowers and vegetables would be appropriate for my garden.

DIY Health

In my last column I mentioned three big contributors to being overweight: water, undigested food and emotional weight. We looked at the water side last time, now comes the others.

This has got to be the yuckiest category of body weight. It has been estimated...

Smashing the Window Myth

You hear the come-on or see a flyer: “Replace your drafty old windows and slash your heating bill by up to 60%!” But there is no statistical evidence proving these claims. If your old windows had no putty left, broken or missing panes, and don’t shut -- then they might be wasting a lot of energy. That would be due to deferred maintenance, not obsolescence in most cases...

"Land of the Free, Home of the Brave"

Why Create A Backyard Habitat?

Last month, I wrote about the formation of the Highland Park Community Wildlife Habitat project (HPCWH) and the idea of Backyard and Community Habitats. The HPCWH operates as a local counterpart to the "Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program" of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Our borough is off to a running start in our effort to become the first municipality in New Jersey to become a certified Community Wildlife Habitat.

But why should individual property owners create a wildlife habitat? What's in it for you?

Downtown dance studio celebrates a silver anniversary
Michelle and Emilio Garced still taking it all in stride

"Make it fast, fun and easy." These were the words that began a dance revolution, internationally and right here in Highland Park. Over a hundred years ago Mr. Arthur Murray began a movement that got people up, onto their feet and doing the jitterbug - waltz - tango -- or whichever dance was a big hit at the time. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Raritan Avenue's very own Arthur Murray Dance Studio, and they are just as strong as the first day they opened.

In 1982 the Arthur Murray franchise made its way to Highland Park, when Michelle and Emilio Garced opened their studio in a house near Third and Raritan. Soon after, the commercial building at 75 Raritan Ave opened and the Garceds were one of the original tenants, along with Palmer Video (now Raritan Video), China Star, and a Blimpie's. More recently, they enlarged their studio, growing into the space left when the video store downsized...

Cleo's cranks it up in the gateway

Anyone who spends their weekends and vacations exploring small-town America knows that most of the action in a typical suburban "downtown" is concentrated in one area. For residents and guests of Highland Park, this area lies between 2nd and 5th avenues. But, Darrin Faille, owner of Cleo's Bagel Dish and Café, is hoping to bring some of that action a little further south.

Prior to taking over ownership of Cleo's, Darrin managed a club, which helped spark his interest in entertaining people.

"I want to bring in a little nightlife," he said. He also stated that he has a desire to change the café, to modernize it...
